Can you really get the Spanish Digital Nomad Visa in 20 days?

Legally, the UGE has 20 business days to decide. In reality, I would plan for around 6 months

2 months to prepare → 2 months for the answer → 2 months for formalities after approval.

2 months to prepare

Preparing the paperwork takes time.

Some documents need to be requested as an updated original, then apostilled, and finally sworn translated. The order matters.

Expiration dates also matter. You don't want to prepare a document too early and discover that it is no longer valid when you submit your application.

2 months for the answer

Yes, the UGE has 20 business days to decide.

But several things can happen:

• Inadmission: you forgot to pay the fee, upload an important document, sign something, or you are not in Spain when required.

• Additional requirement: probably the most common situation. The UGE asks for additional documents or information, and the processing period stops until you reply.

You also need to watch the notifications carefully. You generally have 10 calendar days to access the notification. Once you have read it, you normally have 10 business days to respond to an additional requirement.

• If you don't respond on time, the application can be archived or dismissed.

• Silence: if the 20 business days expire without a decision, positive administrative silence may apply. But you may need to request the certificate of positive silence. Although the administration should issue it, the timing is not guaranteed and can vary from several days to several months.

2 months for formalities after approval

Approval is not the end.

This is where your rights and obligations start and where you complete the practical formalities in Spain.

For example:

• Registering your permanent address in Spain.

• Register your autonomo (if you come as a free-lance or business owner)

• Obtaining your TIE resident´s card (biometrics frist)

So, can you get the Digital Nomad Visa in 20 days?

Possibly not

For a realistic relocation plan, I would allow around 6 months from preparation to completion.

The 20 business days are a legal deadline for the decision — not a realistic timeline for the whole process.
